Corporation Tax Payment Deadlines: An Overview

Standard Annual Payment

The default rule is that UK corporation tax is payable 9 months and 1 day after the end of the accounting period.

Examples:

  • 12-month accounting period to 31 December 2025: payment due 1 October 2026
  • 6-month accounting period to 30 June 2025: payment due 1 April 2026

If the period is longer than 12 months, it is split into two tax return periods with separate tax payments.

Quarterly Instalment Payments (QIPs)

QIPs for Large Companies

Companies are required to pay corporation tax in quarterly instalments if their taxable profits exceed  GBP 1.5 million per annum, divided by the number of active associated companies worldwide. These are known as “large companies”.

Instalment Dates (Standard for 12-Month Year):

  • 6 months and 13 days after the start of the accounting period
  • 9 months and 13 days after the start
  • 14 days after the end
  • 3 months and 14 days after the end

Example: Year End 31 Dec 2025

  • 14 July 2025
  • 14 October 2025
  • 14 January 2026
  • 14 April 2026

A first-year exemption may apply if profits are below GBP 10 million (adjusted for short periods and associated companies).

QIPs for Very Large Companies

Companies are considered “very large” if taxable profits exceed GBP 20 million per annum (also reduced by the number of associated companies).

Instalment Dates (Standard for 12-Month Year):

  • 2 months and 13 days after the start of the accounting period
  • 5 months and 13 days after the start
  • 8 months and 13 days after the start
  • 11 months and 13 days after the start

Example: Year End 31 Dec 2025

  • 14 March 2025
  • 14 June 2025
  • 14 September 2025
  • 14 December 2025

Associated Companies: Why They Matter

The GBP 1.5m and  GBP 20 million limits for QIPs are divided by the number of active associated companies. For example:

  • A UK subsidiary with 1 other active group company: limit is GBP 750,000
  • A UK subsidiary with 3 other group companies: limit is GBP 375,000

We will help you assess your group structure and determine if your UK company is caught by QIP rules.

Managing QIPs and Cash Flow

Quarterly instalments are especially challenging in the first year they apply, as the company may be paying the tax for the previous year and QIPs for the current year simultaneously. We help you:

  • Project liabilities in advance.
  • Time your payments.
  • Avoid interest charges from HMRC.

Interest & Penalties

  • Late Payment Interest: Charged by HMRC if tax is paid late.
  • Overpayment Interest: Paid by HMRC on overpaid corporation tax.
  • Penalties: Can be charged where payments have been recklessly or deliberately missed or underpaid.

FAQs

HMRC will charge interest on late payments and pay interest on overpayments. We help monitor your position to minimise cost.
